How many students are able to attend secondary school in Tanzania?

Tanzania has some of the lowest secondary education rates in Africa. There are only enough secondary schools to accommodate less than 20% of eligible students. Only 2% of the population completes secondary school.

School fees present the biggest barrier to secondary education for poor families. For children who are orphaned or otherwise vulnerable, it is often simply impossible to go to secondary school without some sort of assistance. Government public schools also charge tuition, yet many of these schools are of very low quality and lack basic supplies. The teacher-student ratio can be as high as 1:80.

Does it cost much annually to sponsor a student at Peace House Africa ?

PHS does not charge tuition so expenses such as teachers’ salaries, textbooks, exam fees, student uniforms, supplies, medical care, housing and meals are supported through donations and sponsorship. Sponsorship offers the opportunity to personally connect and build a rapport with an individual student at Peace House Secondary (PHS) while supporting the work of Peace House Africa. Student sponsorship is $1,200 per year. You can sponsor as an individual or share a sponsorship with a friend(s) or family. Sponsors can also choose to give annually, monthly or quarterly.

Are many students currently at Peace House Secondary (PHS)?

There are currently 280 students at Peace House Africa. Girls represent just under half of all PHS students, and over half of all Form I students are girls. Form I is the first level of secondary education.

Can I contact the student I am sponsoring?

Absolutely! Your student will be delighted to hear from you and you will receive letters from your student at least twice per year. Your kind words and friendly interest are encouraging to the student. The letters are a chance to practice English and it boosts their self-esteem to know that someone from another part of the world cares about them.

Sponsors are also encouraged to plan a trip to Tanzania and visit PHS. They can meet their student and spend time volunteering at the school. The guesthouse offers safe, comfortable accommodations right on campus, and Peace House Africa staff can help coordinate the right volunteer opportunities within a variety of time frames.

Does PHS house different students on-site?

Students at PHS are orphaned or otherwise vulnerable. Some were living alone on the streets of the nearby city, Moshi. Others were living with distant relatives who either could not or would not provide for the child’s needs. Some were exploited, abused or neglected while others had to interrupt their education to care for a dying parent. All had lived in extreme poverty.

As a secondary school, the students range in age from 13 to 19 years old. Fortunately, residential boarding schools are not at all unusual in Tanzania. Going off to secondary school is a normal experience for many Tanzanian children. This allows students to live safely and securely on the PHS campus while maintaining a sense of normalcy and community.

What is the average income for a Tanzanian family?

Tanzania is considered a developing country in today's world. This means that the majority of the population lives on under $1 per day leading to a gross domestic product per capita of approximately $800.

If I do not like coffee, can I still help?

Yes! By making a donation directly to Global CaféNation, the donor can receive personalized information regarding the student who benefits from the scholarship. This may include pictures, letters, and progress reports.
